Check the roofer
- Registered with the Nebraska Department of Labor (search: dol.nebraska.gov/conreg/Search)
- Certificate of liability insurance, plus workers' compensation if they have employees
- A local address and phone number
- Recent reviews from the last 12 months
Check the estimate
- At least 2 written estimates for the same scope
- Shingle brand and product line named
- Price per sheet of replacement decking written down
- Removal, disposal, permit and cleanup included
- Labor warranty and manufacturer warranty, in writing
- Start date and payment schedule. Don't pay most of the price upfront
Insurance and Nebraska law
- No one offers to pay, waive or rebate my deductible. That's against Nebraska law
- I'm not signing over my insurance claim (a post loss assignment). I'm not required to
- I know I can cancel an insurance funded roofing contract in writing until midnight of the 3rd business day after signing, or after a written claim denial, whichever is later
- I have photos of the damage and the date of the storm
Red flags
- Pressure to sign today
- Door to door offer right after a storm from an out of state crew
- Cash only, or a large deposit before materials arrive
- Not found in the contractor registration search
